MIKE’S AUDITION (see handout)
1. What would be on your list of assumptions - if you were Mike?
- Traffic Jams
- 4+ Hour drive
- NEEDS 2 hours sleep
- Get Ready
Drive to the audition and sleep in his car. ( No Traffic )
Practical - Design challenge/ reflect & refine
- In your blog make a list of two assumptions about your design
1. The design process will take time
2. The production will take time such as printing and editing
- Challenge both of these assumptions (200words)
1. The first assumption is that the design will take time. I need to make sure I have my idea as soon as possible so I can get started straight away and save time. I then need to make sure I spend some time researching on latest trends and do a collection of drafts, realizing that my first design may not be the one I exhibit. I then need time to choose the final concept and then develop it. When I have came up with my design, I then need time to get feedback from others and have time to do final edits. At the end of the design process I then need to leave time for the production which is explained in more detail below.
2. After the design is complete, I then need to make sure there is time left for the production depending on how I want to exhibit my work. If I do T-shirt design I may want my designs printed on a T-shirt, maybe even have someone model them in a photo shoot. Therefor time will be needed for the printing side and if it doesn't turn out quite right the first time it may need to be done again.
- Suggest 2 refinements to solve these challenges (200 words)
1. Keeping organized will help a lot. Having a diary with deadlines on certain tasks will make it easier to know when to stop. Having a calendar will also help to visually show how much time is left on a task in a bigger picture. By keeping organized with tasks, deadlines and to-do lists will help in keeping the design process running without focusing on too much detail and wasting time. Being organised is not my strongest point as I tend to pay attention to detail and loose track of time. So sticking to a diary with set daily tasks will help a lot. Keeping the tasks small and do-able so that they are well spread out as a pose to all at the last minute, rushed and poor quality.
2. Another refinement to solve the challenges is to do the appropriate research. Research is important in both the design process and the production. In the design process research is crucial to make the best possible design. Researching latest trends, styles, design techniques, etc will help narrow down the design idea. Research in terms of production is also crucial in saving time. Researching prices on printing and getting quotes, looking up trusted printing companies and then looking up contact details so that the bookings can be made in time.
- Illustrate your thoughts with sketches/ diagrams

A sketch I did of me calling companies for quotes and then me recording tasks in my diary. |
It was hard to find, but I eventually found some t shirt designs on a christian artworks site. I chose the following designs because I would like to go for a more youthful and rock style. At the church I have been attending for four years we have a youth band called Vanguard, perhaps I could design a logo and t shirt design for them!

Video Commentary
Here is a really cool video on how to put your designs onto a t shirt in Photoshop. This video shows you how to apply it and make it realistic. It is good to show your client or even just to show you how the overall image will appear on a t-shirt. I would like to apply this to my design before I get them printed or I can present it like this!

Mike's Audition - just providing the answers is not the point of this exercise. You were asked to challenge each item in your list of assumptions. Please complete this part.
ReplyDeleteApart from that an excellent blog - and I love your background - kinda licorice all-sorts!
