Week 09 3D Design

In today's lesson we disscused to the class were we are up to in our 3D Design process, some of the challenges and solutions and then we worked on our idea individually for the rest of the lesson.

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation

 Producing a range - 25 mins

1.     Present and discuss your 3D exhibition piece(s) with the class (5 mins each)

I discussed my 3D idea of creating the light bulb chandelier. I showed sketches I did in my diary and discussed the materials and the challenges.

reference: sketch of mine 7/7/11

Challenges 1:
Is it going to be really fragile?
Solution: Dip them in glue? or maybe a bit of clear sticky tape so they don't break when they clang together.

Challenge 2:
Could be expensive and where will I get them form? Is it cheaper at bunnings, coles, lighting shop or whole saler?
Sollutuion: Get quotes, have a look around

2. How many of you are collaborating with other schools?
not me?..

Youtube Video

Youtube Commentary
I thought about how I am going to install my chandelier in the exhibition. Above is a video on how to install a chandelier in the ceiling. It is a good video that explains the technicalities well. This process however looks messy in regard to drilling holes into the ceiling. I spoke to Josie about the easiest way to install the chandelier as she works at Beacon Lighting. She recommended buying a bayonet fitting cord that goes through the ceiling to the nearest power point.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation 30 mins

1.     Work on your own for the exhibition

2.     Make a list of your proposed exhibition works

- light bulb chandelier
- pillow design

3.  Itemise:
•     Dimensions
•     Display requirements (hanging / floor space / special FX / audio / video)
I would like to have a corner of the room to display my exhibit. As there will be a chair, as well as
a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

•     A short description of the concept
My 3D design is going to be a series of interior objects that reflect a modern and fun theme. The
light bulb chandelier will be hanging from the roof with a single one in the middle that will be
connected and lit up, lighting up the ones surrounding. If I have time I would love to design a
modern pillow case. I am thinking fluer de lis.

•     The name of the piece
Bright Ideaz. If it turns out. I would love to have 'Bright Ideaz' on the wall as a name of a fake
interior design company. The title Bright Ideaz came from the light bulb idea and I thought it
would be cool to play on the title with a light bulb as the 'i' in bright. Below are some
       experimentation.

•     Materials used
Lightbulbs, wire(coat hangers?), my chair from home, sewing machine, super glue, adobe CS5,
scissors, electricity chord, power plug, printer, etc.

I am going to source the lightbulbs from Beacon lighting as Josie said that they are selling them cheap to get rid of them. The chords I will try and source from Bunnings and the wire from the wreckers or old coat hangers.

4.     Save this as a Word doc and copy to the SHARE folder for the PRINT group

5.     Blog all the above

Week 09 2D Design

In today's class...

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation

PRODUCING A RANGE - 15 mins Sketch in your Visual Diary or Illustrator

1. Clear rendition of 3 invitation / flyer layouts using the logo & text supplied
2. The design must have space for sponsor logos
3. CDU logo must be on the bottom right – check branding rules

BLOG - 15 mins Each student post the group results in your blog with images and descriptive text

I began with a simple red border and at first I thought it looked good, but I think it needed to be more eye catching. I figured that the paint splashes would be effective as it resembles art and ties in with the style of the logo, with the 10 squared written in a brush stroke. I chose red and splashed around the border and then chose a light pink to make it less grunge, break up the colour red and to bring out the headline.

Here is the other side of the pamphlet. I tried to make use of blank spaces as I didn't want to make it too busy. I highlighted the text with the white splashes and to keep the theme of the front cover.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation

30 mins – Illustrator / 10 mins Presentations / 10 mins Blog

1. Layout your version of all 3 designs decided on in the group exercise

I presented my idea to the class and had good responses on the layout. Comments were that it relates to the logo well and the colour choice is good. It looks like paint splashes and not grungy which was what I worried about a little. Happy with how it turned out.

2. Show your results to the class
3. Blog screenshots of your work

For my 2D Design project I changed my mind about doing the band logo due to a better idea. I had been doodling in Illustrator and had created a chicken cartoon character and decided to further develop the idea. Here is the beginnings so far.

I first created the chicken by using basic shapes in Adobe Illustrator.

I then began to add features and characteristics to create different personalities. I think this will be effective.

Week 08 3D Design

In today's lesson we discussed our 3D Ideas and the materials we will be using, discussing as a group the best choices.

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation
Selecting:

Materials tools equipment
Light bulbs, wire(coat hangers?), my chair from home, sewing machine, super glue, adobe CS5, scissors, electricity chord, power plug, printer, etc.

Discuss your choice of the above as a group – give reasons

In class we discussed the light bulbs and there cost, as Josie works at Becon Lighting. We discussed the best possible choice of light bulb and concluded with the Halogen sort. We figured a coat hanger would be the cheapest and easiest way to go with wire and the electricity side, Josie said would be easy. So that was a relief.

PRACTICAL – Concept Realisation

Work on your 3D Exhibition piece(s)

Here are some sketches I did that I designed myself that I thought would be cool and fun to make. I decided I needed a back up plan if my chandelier idea failed. It is a risky assignment as there are many challenges I may face. My biggest one at the moment is the cost. I am worried its going to be really expensive...

Reference: sketches by me

This video is awesome! I love the colours and how the paint falls. Love this effect. So bright and beautiful. If I choose to do this for my 3D Design I would either use a splash effect or a drip effect. If I have time to after creating the lamp.
