Week 04 3D Design

GROUP EXERCISE
THIS WEEK – Experimentation: Exploring & Challenging

o     Each group member choose the best of their designs from last week’s practical
o     The group votes on the 3 best designs
o     Using the idea of experimentation the whole group discusses and researches how each chosen
design concept could be explored and challenged
o     The Scribe for each group documents findings for 3 designs under these headings
a)     Design Exploration b)     Design Challenges

To begin today's lesson we brought our ideas together on the Eco-friendly form of transport.
We then took a group vote on the best idea. The highest vote was for Josie's two seater design and Maha's idea for a children's attachment.

We then brainstormed some catchy names for our eco-friendly transport.
We came up with some great ideas such as Greenfoot for the one seater and Greenfeet for the two seater but we thought it was too typical for Eco products. We then came up with Bigtoe and Littletoe with the tagline 'for a small footprint'. I really like this option as it creatively portrays the Eco transport without being predictable and boring. Instead it is very catchy.

After we had agreed on the name, tagline and design we then had to explore the challenges as seen below;

Design Exploration
  • Safe
  • Comfortable
  • Modified trailer attachment
  • Toe hitch
  • Signage (rear)
  • Safety lights
  • Maximum capacity
  • Cabin lights
  • Protective cabins
  • Sidecar
  • Clip on side
  • Modular that becomes 1 when joined
  • Extra space in back for either a kid or groceries

Final decision:
  • Safe
  • Comfortable
  • Cabin lights
  • Modular that becomes 1 when joined from the back
  • Extra space in back for either a kid or groceries

Design Challenges
  • How can it attach and detach easily?
  • Left or right side

Solutions:
  • Lever attachment, which grabs onto safety bar on the back of the “Big Toe”
  • Attaching to the back is safer than either side because on side you have dangers of people overtaking and side swiping the children’s attachment or if “Big Toe” swerves there are signs or trees on the other side.
Idea 2: 2 Seater “Big Toe”

Exploration:
  • Safe
  • Comfortable
  • Safety lights
  • Maximum capacity
  • Cabin lights
  • Back designed to allow extra children’s attachment
  • Solar panel location
  • Windscreen plastic or glass
  • Doors or open with safety bars?
  • Four wheel or two wheel
  • Space in cabin without attachment

Final decision:
  • Safe
  • Comfortable seating
  • Safety lights on outside
  • Maximum capacity of two average adults
  • Cabin lights warning of weight capacity, power supply
  • Solar panel will be on roof
  • Windscreen thick plastic
  • No doors
  • Two wheeled
  • Under feet a little compartment to put bag or personal items

Challenge:
  • How will it allow attachment to easily be attached
  • Speed it will reach. Will it go on normal roads or foot paths
  • What happens if it rains will driver get wet?

Solution:
  • Lever attachment, allows “Little Toe” to grab onto back rail
  • For small roads and footpaths
  • Plastic attachment will be supplied to clip onto frame to prevent water getting inside
  •

    PRACTICAL – Design Exploration
30 mins – Choose your favourite concept from all your current 3D designs

    •     Use any tools you wish
    •     Put the results and a paragraph of description in your Blog
    •     Through a combo of research and creative thinking explore the possibilities of concept
           experimentation, variation and evaluation
    •     List these items clearly, draft examples and explain your thinking

    Description of my 3D Design
I am going to go with a lamp and a pillow design. I would like to have a long lamp that sits in the corner of my exhibition. I will bring in my red chair that will display my pillow in the corner of my room. This pillow will probably be a black and white.

Above is a video that backs up my ideas. She explains that too many pillows is too much and that they are about comfort. She also talked about how the design of the pillow need to match with something else in the room. "they need to speak to it" she said. She also explained the difference between designer pillows and modern pillows, the difference being the detail. I would like to go for a modern look.

    Two Experiments
    - Try different fabrics to see how strong they are and how the light shines through them
    - Collect wire and experiment ways to hold the material in place such as glue, tape, etc.

    Pros & Cons
The pros of making a lamp is that it will turn out great and the light will shine through well. The cons is that the wire wont hold well against the fabric.

    Choosing & Refusing
I need to look into some fabrics and choose which designs I like the most. I refuse now to create my own pattern as it is too time consuming and the focus is on the 3D Design. So I want to make sure the structure is original and well put together.

    1. Good start, but fizzled at the end. Might need to revisit this and tweak it.

    2. Good work on this update, but you are still using different headings to the Power Point which makes trawling through your ideas a tad confusing.

      Cut & paste please - e.g.
