Week 04 2D Design

In today's class we had a group discussion on our ideas for the exhibition. We then had a class vote on the two favorite ideas. The results were the T-shirt design and screen print for a lamp. First we brainstormed the T-shirt design asking and answering the following questions;

GROUP EXERCISE (Experimentation: Exploring & Challenging)

Is it a big or small design? medium
For male or female? Females
What colour? Medium grey with black design & text
Young or old person? young
Front, back or side of shirt? Front

Here is a pic i found on the net of the look we want to head for;
www.googleimages/greytshirtdesign

We then explored the possible challenges and came up with solutions
Challenge 1
The design could be too dark
Solution
Make it a lighter grey

Challenge 2
may not appeal to the targeted audience of young females
Solution
Research what makes women happy as well as the latest fashions and trends

After we finished discussing the T-shirt design we had unfortunately ran out of time and had to brainstorm the print design for the lamp in our own time..

PRACTICAL – Design Exploration

Our next practical was to select a design we have created and analyze it. Brainstorming what could be modified to make it better. We had to think of two modifications and discuss the pros and cons of each one.

My design;

Modification 1
- Change the tag line 'take the challenge' to suit the context by en cooperating 'learn.' For example 'you never stop learning' or 'its never too late to learn something new' or learning is just the beginning'
- change the font colour to red or an eye catching colour

Pros
- The theme will be carried out throughout the design
- The tag line will stand out more

Cons
- Could make the design unbalanced
- The red could be hard to read with the black background

Modification 2
- Take away the scrabble piece letters to plain text highlighted by a change in text colour. Maybe a red to suit the logo theme colours

Pros
- The text will suit the already existing logo
- The look wont be associated with the scrabble game and be more professional

Cons
- The text may not stand out as much as the scrabble pieces do

Going back to the prac at the beginning of the lesson I returned to brainstorming the last design option of a screen print for lamp;

Questions
What theme do I want to go for? modern
What colours? red and black
Pattern or plain? A simple design pattern
Mood? Romantic, modern

Challenge 1
The lamp may not give enough light with the red design
Solution
Make a large lamp that sits on ground level and is of a rectangular shape to suit the modern theme

  2. Ah - finally she blogs! It seems you may have addressed everything here, but your labelling is a bit unclear.

    Please cut & paste the questions from your Power Points then address each item directly. Good design is good communication - you need to be clear all the time. I know you can do it.
